President’s Message 2008
May you live long!
May you be blessed with long and healthy life!
Haven’t we Sri Lankan’s greeted each other, thus for generations little knowing perhaps, of the meaning of this wonderful wish?
The Kandy Society of Medicine since its inception in 1964 has contributed in its own way to the betterment of public health of our country. Through education of the medical fraternity and public at large.
The weekly Continuing Medical Education (CME) lectures and many other workshops conducted by the experts in the relevant fields, culminating in the Foundation Sessions and Annual Academic Sessions as well as the Journal of the Kandy Society of Medicine ‘Sri Lanka Journal of Medicine’ provide invaluable forum for discussion, sharing and dissipation of knowledge.
Dr. T. Varagunam's Message
The KSM Sets New Trends: In 1964, the inaugural year of the KSM, there was a closely knit group of about 20 doctors who were the KSM members. At that time we never foresaw the meteoric rise of the membership which now stands at more than 500 and consists not only of doctors but also of scientists working in the health field.
In 2009 Dr. Harith Wimalaratne, a competent physician, will hand over the Presidency of the KSM to a first class scientist –Dr. Vajira Weerasinghe who is not a medical doctor but a doctor of philosophy. This is in keeping with the current global trends in professional colleges and in medical societies where the best person is chosen to lead, irrelevant of whether he or she is a medical doctor. This phenomenon is also a reflection of the maturity of the KSM which has been in the forefront of showing how to bring about a change for the better in the functioning of medical institutions and societies.
President’s Message 2014
I consider it a great honor and a privilege to be appointed as the President of the most prestigious Clinical body in the central province and wish to thank all of you who entrusted me with this task. I feel quite humbled when I go through the list of past presidents of the KSM, as many of them are household names in this country and many others are my revered teachers who have inspired me. I will make it certain that the trust you all placed in me will not be in vain.
I take this opportunity to appreciate with admiration the yeoman’s service the outgoing President, Prof Badra Hewawithana rendered to the KSM. She has put the whole house in order , and that will make my life more easier. I am indeed thankful to her and her energetic committee for all they have contributed to the KSM.
President’s Message 2010
First of all I wish to express my sincere gratitude to members of Kandy Society of Medicine for placing trust on me to hold the prestigious post of the President of KSM.
Kandy society of medicine, the well established society with its traditions, now popularly referred to as KSM, had a very simple beginning. In 1963 Dr .Karunaratne, Dr .Varugunam and Mr. Rasaratnam organised, Tuesday evening talks to discuss interesting cases, which later came to be known as Tuesday talks.
These talks later shifted to Peradeniya physiology lecture theatre and was incorporated as activities of a newly formed medical society in 1964 under the name, Kandy society of medicine. Professor RS Watson was the 1st president, the 3 Doctors who started the talks became its 1st secretaries.
Up to now 39 individuals have held the office of President of the Kandy society of medicine and the society has developed in to a well established institution with a life membership of more than 600 medical officers and is currently the 2nd oldest and the 2nd largest medical association in Sri Lanka, second only to Sri Lanka Medical association.
